Getting Back on Course - The Country Club of Coral Springs is making improvements to return to glory

The Country Club of Coral Springs is undergoing a renaissance that is taking the local landmark to new heights and returning the once premiere club to being among the best in Broward County.

"We got a reputation for having a golf course that was in really, really bad shape," says Bill Friesing, general manager and director of golf.

All that changed when lifelong Coral Springs resident Bernie Moyle bought the place.

"His goal was to bring it back to life," Friesing says.

No Small Plans - The story of three master planned communities that have come of age

CCCS Preface> - In the late 1960's, Coral Ridge Properties developed a neighborhood in Coral Springs and called it The Country Club. These single family homes were adjacent to land designated for a golf course, which would later become The Country Club of Coral Springs. The following article highlights Coral Springs, FL as one of three master planned communities. The Country Club of Coral Springs was an integral part of the city planning, and continues to play a prominent role in our community over thirty years later.

Coral Springs, Florida, was planned and developed beginning in the 1960s by the private development firm of Coral Ridge Properties, then working in the Fort Lauderdale area and seeking affordable land farther west. This swampy area next to the Everglades had been drained by a system of canals and levees in the 1950s, and then used for farming and ranching. The company began buying land in 1961; over the next 10 years the city grew to almost 24 square miles.

Taking Care of Business

Bernie Moyle didn't intend to start a hotel brand when he graduated law school at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL. "I was dragged into it kicking and screaming by Roger," he jokes about his longtime partner Roger Bloss. But since 1999, Moyle and Bloss, with the help of several other associates, not only started Vantage Hospitality, but also created one of the more innovative and fastest growing franchise brands in the industry.

Springs Country Club gets new owner, opens its doors

In 2009, the Country Club of Coral Springs came perilously close to slipping into history books after years of inexorable decline. It has, however, slowly begun to regain some of the considerable glory of its early years.

The change in fortunes is primarily due to the introduction of ACC Strategies, owned by Coral Springs resident Bernie Moyle. The company, which stepped in just when the club was about to go under, has since made improvements to the property, including the golf course. The club had been privately owned for 40 years but is now open to the public.

Moon over... Coral Springs; it was time to try some night golf

CORAL SPRINGS – The concept of playing golf at night had to be the result of some college fraternity looking for a prank to use on future pledges; load the guys with some beer, hand them the keys to the carts and send them on their way for nine holes.

The fun would start as golfers moved to their starting positions in a four-player scramble without the benefit of headlights, flashlights or any other light for that matter, because the course will have a scant few glow in the dark sticks positioned around the property. A golf-ball looking object which changes...

Coral Springs, Coconut Creek, Wellington among Money magazine's 'Best Places to Live'

CORAL SPRINGS — Was it the Sportsplex that pushed Coral Springs into Money magazine's list of the top 100 places to live in the United States? Did butterflies do it for Coconut Creek? Has Wellington entered the lineup astride polo ponies?

And what does it matter, anyway?

With a list of criteria including proximity to public golf courses, crime statistics, affordability and school scores, Money culled 800 American cities and towns and chose the hundred "Best Places to Live" for its August issue.

Fourth Annual Invitational Charity Golf Tournament
Benefiting SmileTrain.org

The Patron Spirits Co. hosted its fourth annual Invitational Charity Golf Tournament benefiting SmileTrain.org on April 29 at the Country Club of Coral Springs.
Charity Golf Tournament
John McDonnell, COO of Patron Spirits International, selected the Smile Train, an international organization dedicated to helping those children who suffer from cleft lip and palate, several years ago as worthy worldwide organization with which Patron could significantly give back to those in need.

"The reason we chose the Smile Train is that every dollar goes directly to the doctors who perform surgeries," McDonnell said.

Cleft palates can cause serious problems for children, especially those in developing countries. The children have trouble eating and speaking properly, and are not allowed to go to school or hold jobs. The Smile Train has helped more than 210,000 children with unrepaired palates since 1999. The surgery only takes about 45 minutes.

Last year, the Patron Spirits Co. hosted tournament in Coral Springs raised enough money to provide 450 children with the operation. This year was even more successful, and the fourth annual Invitational Charity Golf Tournament in Coral Springs raised enough to provide 500 children with the operation.

Volunteers came from around the block and around the country, McDonnell said. Patron employees, friends, family, golf aficionados and those just wanting to help, gave their time and energy during the tournament.
